THE ALGAVALUE PROJECT

AlgaValue project is conceived by a consortium that joins Depsiextracta - Tecnologias Biológicas, Lda., Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (IPL), Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) and Universidade de Aveiro (UA).

AIMS

The main objective of the project is the valorization of the bioactive compounds of the remaining biomass resulting from the biotechnological process of production of squalene and DHA by the microalgae Aurantiochytrium sp., in order to economically maximize the whole process.

Project:

Optimization of the biomass production of Aurantiochytrium sp., In order to obtain squalene and DHA and the valorization of the remaining biomass through the extraction of compounds with high commercial value.

Application of innovative extraction technologies, such as high hydrostatic pressures, that enhance the valorization of the production process.

Recirculation of the exhausted culture medium resulting from the production of microalgae which has a high economic and environmental significance.

Expected Results:

Develop methods to allow obtain 2 Ton / year of squalene production from the production of 30 Ton of algal biomass under controlled conditions.

Develop techniques that allow the exhausted culture medium recycling to minimize its environmental impact and microalgae production costs by 10%.

Explore extraction methodologies that increase the squalene extraction rate by 80%.

Optimize the purification process of the final products to be commercialized in order to reach purity levels of 95%.

To value extraction process by-products and increase the sales volume by 50%.

Reduce by 50% the use of sources traditionally used by the company (shark liver oil and olive oil refining By-products) to obtain squalene.

Methodology:

Growth conditions optimization.

Development of extraction and purification conditions of squalene, DHA and carotenoids.

Valorization of remaining algal biomass.

Promotion and dissemination.

Project management (and coordination).
